LEC052018 DEVIKA. P ESSAY ONLINE CLASSES
ONLINE LEARNING IS AN EFFECTIVE PLATFORM OF EDUCATION; IN THE CONTEXT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC
It has now been a year since the origin and spread of the corona virus pandemic around the world. It has shaken whole streams, particularly the education sector have adversely affected by this deadly decease. However the great entry and expansion of online classes have reduced many difficulties in this field as it continues to access to learning for more people irrespective of the concept of time and place. This essay examines the evidence and factors of the effectiveness of online classes during the Coved -19 pandemic by giving a special focus on its positive aspects and strategies.
In most cases the Covid-19 has resulted in schools shut all across the world. Globally, over 1.2 billion children were out the classroom. As a result, education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms.
It should be noted the internet has made online learning possible and many students, researchers and educators are interested in online learning to enhance and improve students learning outcomes particularly in higher education.Gary A Berg and Michael Simonson define distance learning also called e-learning and online learning in their article named Distance Learning “as a form of education in which the main elements include physical separation of teachers and students during the instruction and the use of various technologies to facilitate student- teacher communication.”
As a result of this, the enrollment of students in the online classes have increased. Stephanie J. Blackmon and Claire Major say that:
The growth of online learning during the last decade has been remarkable. While in 1998 there were too few students enrolled online to count, according to a survey of more than 2500 institutions, by 2009 more than 5.6 million students were taking an online course… these numbers indicate that online learning has become an important mode of delivering instruction in higher education.

Moreover schools, colleges and universities are using video conferencing platforms like Zoom and Google Hangouts to conduct classes. It includes audio and video lectures, individual or group activities, assignments with scheduled deadlines. Thus both students and teachers get familiar with technology that is used in the course website. Many teachers and students find these tools extremely helpful to take classes even more engaging than the regular classrooms. Anna Sun and Xiufang Chen say that:
This discourse consisted of instructors engaging students in content materials, reviewing and responding to student’s posts, asking questions or expressing observations pertaining to student’s discussions, keeping course discussions moving in the right direction, interacting with individual students who need extra instructions and attentions and motivating toward higher order learning and knowledge.
(Online Education and its Effective Practice)
Altogether online classes make the students more productive both in the technical and theoretical field of learning. It also create many qualities such as punctuality, self- discipline, diligent, positive attitude, having seriousness, keeping updating, academic competency, and so on. Hence online classes play a crucial role in educating the students during the covid pandemic.
