 Critically analyse the significance of equivocator in the play Macbeth

       The play Macbeth have many references to historical events in England. The source of Shakespeare's Macbeth is the account of Macbeth,Duncan in Holinshed's Chronicles(1587). Equivocation plays a bigger role in this tragedy. The mentioning of equivocator in the porter scene have allusion to some political events in Scotland.

    The drunker porter scene is often interpreted as comic relief as the preceding is about bloodshed murder. The porter scene,Act 2 scene 3,porter uses ambiguous language.The ambiguous utterances of porter intensifies the tragic impact in the play.

Knock,
Knock! who's there in the other devil's name?
Faith,here's an equivocator ,that would
swear in both the scales against either scale;
who committed treason enough for God's sake
yet could not equivocate to heaven:O,come in equivocator.(Shakespeare MIT)

The events in the play differ extensively from the history of the real Macbeth.The events of the tragedy are usually associated with the execution of Henry Garnett for complicity in the Gunpowder plot of 1605(Scihub). The mentioning of equivocator in the play had an allusion to a Jesuit priest named Father Garnett confessed that he lied for God's sake.Gunpowder conspiracy is an abortive conspiracy to destroy the protestant king James I of England.(Britannica). Other than this instance,equivocation is widely seen in the play through Witches,Macbeth and his wife.

Macbeth and lady Macbeth equivocate to hide the fact about murdering the King.Witches equivocate all their apparitions(Act IV ,Scene I ) but Macbeth did not realize due to power hunger.

Be bloody,bold,and resolute;laugh to scorn
The power of man,for none of women born
Shall harm Macbeth.(The Folger Shakespeare)

Macbeth shall never be vanquished be,until
Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane hill
Shall come against him.

Equivocation lead the characters and situation to more destruction.Macbeth could not realize the equivocation of Witches even though Banquo warned because deep inside him lies suppressed ambition towards power.The significance of equivocator revealed the nuances of equivocation through the reference of political accounts and characters in the play.Every kind of equivocation in the play leads to tragedy in one way or another.
