Mechanics of Writing
Mechanics of writing refers to the rules of the written language such as capitalization, punctuation and spelling. The goal of mechanics is to make the writing precise and grammatically correct.
Punctuation
To understand the content properly, punctuation is necessary.It will help reader to get the message in clear and precise form.So it is essential for you to write meticulously following the punctuation rules.
Comma(, )
Comma is to tell the reader to pause or the word preceding the comma is part of a list.Comma can be used for different purposes.
•After the introductory word or phrase.
-To begin with, let me introduce the aim of the project.
•To list nouns in a sentence.
-We should do marketing in social media like Instagram, Whatsapp, Linkedin and Facebook to have better visibility among people.
•To separate two independent clauses ina compound sentence connected by 'and', 'but', 'or', 'for, 'nor', 'so', 'yet'.
-The doctor says his fever is gone, but he is still feeling tired.
•To list coordinating adjectives and to separate items in any other series.
-The new house has well-furnished, spacious TV hall.
•To separate interrupting words and expressions in a sentence.
•To set off a quote from the rest of a sentence.
Semicolon(;)
Semicolon indicates a pause or break in a sentence which is longer than a comma but shorter than a period.
•Usually semicolons separate two closely related independent clauses in a sentence.
-I know your father;he has close association with my uncle.
•Used to replace a period.
-Monsoon sets in Kerala in the month of June ;district authorities make elaborate preparations prior to the onset of monsoon.
•To separate items in a list when the items are phrases or one of the items includes a conjunction or comma.
•The word 'however' comes after a semicolon or a period.
Colon(:)
Colons are used in formal and informal contexts.
•To separate two independent clauses where the first introduces or explains the second.
- I have not even completed writing assignment:submission date is round the corner.
•To start a list of items
•To introduce a quotation that is independent from the structure of the main sentence.
•To separate title from subtitle.
Apostrophe(')
Apostrophe is used to form the plural of a number, letter, symbol, abbreviation.The main use is to indicate a contraction or possession.Contracted forms are not encouraged in academic style
Double Quotation Mark("")
Double inverted commas or quotation marks are generally used to present a material directly taken from a source.They are used for titles in essay, poem, stories.
Single Quotation Marks(")
You can use on technical term of a word or phrase.If you want to show a quote within a quote you can show the first quote in double inverted commas and the quote within in single inverted commas.
Hyphen(-)
•In compound words beginning with an adverb, hyphen is used only if the adjective comes before the noun.
-a long-lasting performance, well-conceived idea.
•Compound numbers less than 100 are usually spelt with hyphen.
•Used between prefix and proper noun, and prefix and a number.Certain prefixes (e.g., all-, anti-, self-, half-,)are always followed by hyphens.
Period(.)
The period is considered as the simplest as the simplest punctuation mark.Periods falls at the end of a sentence.
Parenthesis and brackets() []
Parenthesis are used to set off an information which is nonessential to the meaning of the sentence.It is also used to expand or clarify the preceding or following information ;to expand abbreviations, and to insert dates.In academic style, it is used to give in-text citations.
Brackets or square brackets are used to insert a clarification, a translation, parenthesis within parenthesis, a change in capitalization.
Dash(___)
Dash is also called 'em dash'.Em dash is three times longer than a hyphen.Em dash can be used to replace a colon, comma or parenthesis.Em dashes can indicate a break in the flow of the sentence, to give some additional information.
En dash is used to indicate inclusive page numbers and dates.Space is not needed before or after en dashes.
Capitalization
It refers to writing first letter of a word in uppercase and rest in lowercase.
•The main words of a title.
•Proper nouns and adjectives derived from proper nouns
•Days and months.
