Machanics of writing

Punctuation is the system of signs or symbols to a reader to show how a sentence is constructed and how it should be read. Every sentence should include at least a capital letters at start and a full stop , exclamation mark or question mark at the end. This basic system indicates that the sentence is complete.

1. Full Stop / Period (.) :-

A full Stop should always be used to end a sentence. The full Stop indicates that a point has been made and that you are about to move on to further a related points.

2. Commas (,) :-

As Commas represent a pause ,it is good practice to read our writing out loud and listen to where you make natural pauses as you read it. Commas are also used to use more than one adjective and separate items on a list.

3. Exclamation mark (!) :-

An exclamation mark indicates strong feeling within a sentence such as fear, anger or love. It is also used to accentuate feeling within the written spoken word. The exclamation mark at the end of a sentence means that you do not need a full stop.

4. Question mark (?) :-

The question mark simply indicates that a sentence is asking a question. It always comes at the end of a sentence.

5. Semi- colon (;) :-

The semi - colon is perhaps the most difficult sign of punctuation to use accurately. If in doubt, avoid using it and convert the added meterial into a new sentence.

6. Colon (:) :-

The colon within a sentence makes a very pointed pause between two phrases. They are two main uses of the colon.
1. It is most commonly used when listing.
2. It can be used within a heading or descriptive title.

7. Apostrophe (') :-

The apostrophe sometimes called an inverted comma has two main uses.
1.the apostrophe indicates possession.
2. Use of the apostrophe is to indicate where a letter is omitted.

8. Slash (/) :-

Many people use the slash instead of or and  etc. But  this is not always helpful to the reader.

9. Single quotation mark ('') :-

If the headline includes the title of a song ,short story or a quotation, you would use single quotation marks.

10. Double quotation mark ("") :-

Introduce a word or phrase used as an ironic comment,as slang ,as an invented coined expression. Use double quotation marks the first time the word or phrase is used.

11. Parentheses () :-

Parentheses are used to enclose extra information. Such as a passing comment, a minor example or addition, a brief explanation.

12. Ellipses (....) :-

Ellipsis for omitted meterial within a single quoted sentence. Use ellipses points to show omission within the quotation.

13. Hyphen (-) :-

The hyphen is used to link words together. The hyphen is  also used when a word is split between two lines. The hyphen should be placed between syllables at the end of the upper line.

Every punctuation mark has got its meaning.it makes the writing more accurate and precise.
