LEC052041- Sandhiya J – Mechanics of Writing

Academic writing is clear, concise, focused, structured and backed up by evidence. Academic writing is used to free from structural and grammatical error. Punctuation plays a vital role in academic writing. Punctuation is used in writing to separate sentences and clarify how a sentence should be read.

1.    1.  Comma: The most popular mark of punctuation, the comma(,)is also the least law-abiding.

·        Use a comma before a coordinator (and, but, yet, or, nor, for,so) that links two main clauses.

·        Use a comma to separate item in a series.

    2.   Semicolon : A mark of punctuation (;)used to connect independent clauses and show a closer relationship than a period does.

·        Colon Example – “Happiness isn’t something you experience;its is something you remember.”

3. 3.   Colon    : A mark of punctuation(:) used after a statement(usually an independent clause) that introduces a quotation, an explanation, an example,or a series.

·        Example- “There are three choices in this life: be good, get good,or give up.”

4.  4.    Hyphen: A short horizontal mark of punctuation (-)used between the parts of a compound word or name or between the syllables of a word when divided at the end of a line.

·        Example-“I’m part of the blame-American-last crowd.”

5.  5.     Period: It indicates, when used at the end of a sentence, a strong pause.

·        After abbreviations like etc.,a.m.,p.m.

·        After words like “Goodbye.” “Allright.”

These are some of the examples of punctuation. Without punctuation a sentence cannot be completed. Punctuation is an important agent to convey and understand information correctly
