 Question 1: What is the significance of the reference to the ‘equivocator’ in Macbeth?

The Equivocator scene in the play Macbeth is significant due to the allusion it has to the later scenes in the play. 

The Porter enters in Act 2 Scene 3 of the play Macbeth.

The scene is intended to provide a comic-relief to the audience as well as to provide a hint on what leads  to the tragic end of Macbeth.

The equivocator scene is the beginning of change of fortune for Macbeth.

 

        Question 2:Critically discuss the significance of the reference to the ‘equivocator’ in Macbeth.


      Draft 1:

          The play Macbeth has a reference to the Equivocator in Act 2 Scene 3, which on analysis is found to have several interpretations pertaining to the political and social situation of the period.

      The Porter scene begins with the drunkard Porter complaining about his job.

      The political and social situation of the period was influential in shaping the characters of Shakespeare, the best example being the Equivocator.

      The reference to Equivocator provides a glimpse on the social life of Shakespeare’s time.

       Equivocator is a person who attempts to mislead others by using ambiguous language.

       Thus, by critically analysing the play, it can be concluded that the reference to Equivocator in the play Macbeth reflects religious and political tensions of the time.
