A Master's degree in English language and literature is the gateway to a promising career. Today the future options for MA English students is not only limited to conventional teaching profession but also to diverse professions in media, journalism, writing, etc. This two year course is actually an all round training programme for the student to perform in any field or profession.
For an MA English graduate primarily teaching is the first career option. One can attend national and state level eligibility tests (NET, SET), which are the basic qualification for a teacher in colleges and higher secondary schools, at the time of pursuing masters degree. After pursuing a research degree in English one can become a professor in colleges and other higher institutions. An important thing to remember is that a B.ed degree is required to teach in schools. Spoken english training centres, E learning companies, entrance coaching centres, etc. are also places where an MA English graduate can seek for the post of a teacher.
The writing skills acquired by an MA English graduate is an effective tool for a career. As writers one can get employed in several sectors such as publishing, technology, advertising, business, media, etc. In the field of media and journalism one can aim for jobs like reporting, proofreading, editing, etc. Another important career is as a content writer. The scope in the field of writing content for various websites and blogs, as part of digital marketing, is increasing on a day to day basis.
Translation is another major area of opportunities. Along with English, if one is fluent in a regional vernacular language, then he or she may get a job with a publishing house. Nowadays there are chances to get a job with an online publication platform. Copywriter, corporate communication executive, instructional designer/ subject matter expert etc. are also options for MA English graduates.
