 Job Opportunities after M.A. English

English is one of the most read and understood languages in the world and all credits go to British colonization. According to an estimate, about 20 percent of the total world population speaks English. The rising prominence of English in various fields including academic, commercial, economic and political realms, has resulted in a hike in the career opportunities for M.A. English graduates. Gone are the days when most people believed that a Masters in English was meant only for the emerging writers and teachers. The demand for quality content which targets certain groups of people has opened a wide range of job opportunities, though they may not be high-paying in comparison with professional jobs.

The teaching field provides a great number of job opportunities for M.A. English graduates. They have to crack the National Eligibility Test for teaching in colleges and universities. A two-year B.Ed. program after M.A. is required for teaching in schools along with the eligibility tests.

A variety of opportunities await the people with good writing skills. Content writing is such a field. Content writers are involved in writing the content for blogs, websites and digital marketing campaigns. Another one is Copywriting. Copywriters produce all the text in print advertising. They also write script for television ads, content of billboards, flyers, leaflets etc. Freelance writing is another area for writers though it is not a full time job and work from home is preferred in almost all cases. Technical writing also provides job opportunities. The user manuals are written by technical writers.

An M.A. English graduate can pursue a career as a writer, sub-editor or proofreader for publishing houses, both print and online. Many e-learning companies also recruit in these fields.

If a person is good at reading and writing a regional vernacular language along with English, then he can get a job as a translator in publication houses. Those who are interested in journalism can pursue a job in print media, television channels and in news agencies.

Government agencies provide a wide range of opportunities. After PG, the candidate can appear in competitive examinations conducted by UPSC, SSC, IBPS, RRB etc. and become a public servant. The Staff Selection Commission offers a job of Junior Translator especially for M.A. English graduates.

So, a postgraduate degree in English offers a broad spectrum of career options in private as well as government sectors. The demand for creativity keeps on increasing in this digital world, so are the career options for an M.A. English graduate.
